In celebrating 50 years of the lgfa. We look back to 2013 when the Kilmeena ladies took over Croke Park. Who would have thought back in February 2013 when it was decided to set up a ladies football club in Kilmeena that we would end up playing in Croke Park representing our club and County. Well, on Monday July 15th, 2013 was a very proud and historic day for all involved with Kilmeena Ladies GAA Club. 30 girls with their management, mentors and some parents departed from Kilmeena GAA grounds for a trip of a life time to Croke Park to participate in the Gaelic 4 Girls National Blitz day. Over 1000 girls from all over Ireland took part in this blitz. Our Ladies Club fielded two teams of ten with five subs on each. The girls got a chance to show case their talents and were quick to find the cross bar while others were not so shy in lobbing the ball in the back of the net. All the girls put in a huge performance on the day and represented their club so well. They also got a chance to meet and greet some of the stars associated with ladies football and the county stars presented the girls with a specially designed medal to mark this great occasion. It was a most memorable day and a great honour for our Club and Huge tribute must be paid to the Managers and all involved with the ladies club for all their hard work and commitment. To Celebrate 50 years of @ladiesgaelicfootball we have put together pictures from throughout the last 11 years since our ladies club started back in 2013. The development of our ladies club would not be possible without the help of all the coaches, parents, volunteers and wider community throughout the years. To all our coaches who started with us back in 2013 thanks for making sure the girls in our community were given the chance to play the game we all love. Many of us back then weren’t able to hop a ball but you all stuck with us even after losing almost every game for the first few years 😂🏁 The club would not have succeeded without you all volunteering your own time out of your busy lives. We are now proud to say we have ladies teams all the way from U-10’s to Junior level. The future of our club looks very bright with so many young and talented girls playing in our club 🤍🖤 Keep an eye out on our socials over the next few weeks for a few pictures from throughout the years 👀

After a disappointing defeat away to Bonniconlon last week, any hope of progressing in the Championship for our U16s were shattered with practically the last play of the game against Louisburgh in a fantastic game of football.  Despite going into the game with a diminished squad because of injuries, Kilmeena put it up to Louisburgh from the whistle, trading points with them for a while but trailed by three points by half time, 6-3. With five unanswered points early in the second half, it looked that the lads might edge the contest but Louisburgh weren’t done yet. They stuck to their task and ensured that the home team never led by more than a point or two. A great goal from Kilmeena was matched soon after by Louisburgh. Another point from each side meant that in injury time, Kilmeena led by a single point and the final whistle couldn’t come soon enough for them. However, Kilmeena conceded a free within easy point-scoring range and, with at least a couple of dozen bodies in front of the goal, the ball from the mis-hit free somehow managed to squeeze into the net. Groans from the Kilmeena players and supporters were drowned out by the cheers of the Louisburgh contingent. The final whistle blew almost immediately after and that effectively signalled the end of this campaign.  The result did not reflect the quality of the football played by Kilmeena and their effort and application could not be questioned. Apart from the Bonniconlon game, this team has gelled into a fine outfit in the last five weeks and the coaches could not be more proud of each and every one of them. Our final game, in two weeks at home to Shrule/Glencorrib, will be the final time these boys play together this year and they will go into that game with a determination to end the season with a victory. A slow start in the first half for Kilmeena left too much to claw back in the second half allowing Achill to run out deserving winners in the U16 Boys West Mayo Championship C Div played in McGovern Park Newport yesterday evening. After a convincing win against Burrishoole last Thursday, our U16s beat Islandeady in the U16 West Mayo C Championship semi-final in Kilmeena yesterday evening. Having only been informed minutes before throw-in that we had to play 13-a-side, adjustments had to be made to the starting line-up. After going two points down in the first few minutes, a very harsh black card meant we had to play for 10 minutes with 12 players. Still, our lads got stuck in and two fine saves from our ‘keeper ensured Islandeady’s advantage was short-lived. When we were returned to our full complement of players we settled down and began to pull away from Islandeady. Some fine play, resulting in two goals and a few points, meant we led by five points at half time.  The second half was a physical one resulting in injuries and substitutions on both sides. Having weathered a mini-revival from Islandeady, a timely Kilmeena goal gave us breathing space and we saw the game out, winning by a margin of four points. It was a tough match and full credit must be giving to every member of this determined squad who now find themselves in the West Mayo final against Achill next week.  Final score: Kilmeena 3-7, Islandeady 1-9

Gerard O’Donnell, a high performance coach specialising in running and speed development, held a workshop on Friday evening in the clubhouse and later on the pitch. The idea was to demonstrate to coaches how, with a little tuition, they could introduce practical acceleration skills into their regular coaching sessions. It was most informative and hopefully everyone took away a lot from the evening. Many thanks to the girls and boys who turned up to help Ger demonstrate his techniques and to John Reilly for organising the evening.

Kilmeena LGFA would like to extend a huge thanks to local seaweed harvesters who supply Arramara Teoranta who kindly sponsored a new set of jerseys to the Kilmeena u10 girls. Jim Ryder, of Arramara Teo presented the jerseys to the team last month. The girls decked their new Jersey’s against Louisburgh on a sunny Wednesday June evening. The u10 girls team are so grateful for the generous support received, which is also greatly appreciated by the Club.
