Even though it was four months late, it was almost worth waiting for, as Kilmeena U12s finally got to play their first game of the season - a challenge match away to Westport. At times the football matched the mucky conditions but it was a relief just to be playing a game of football. The first quarter was quiet with minimal scoring and in the second, Westport started the brighter, registering a couple of goals and several points to just a few scores from Kilmeena. Westport pulled further ahead in the third quarter but in the fourth, Kilmeena finally settled and started banging in goals and managed a few points too. Westport won by ten points in the end but had the game lasted another ten minutes, who knows what could’ve happened! There were some heroic performances today in atrocious conditions with some classy defending in particular.

Back row, left to right: Alan Mortimer, Tiernan Ahern, Tom Cox, Sean Keane, Tadhg Daly, Robbie Murphy, Jamie Durkan.
Front row, left to right: Kyle Mulchrone, Cian Moran, Shane Durkan, Kevin Hastings, Cormac Slattery, Felix Zeray, Eoghan Cannon.
All in all, it was an encouraging start to the season. Plenty of work needs to be done but there’s no doubt that this team has the skill, desire and heart to make for a very interesting season indeed. Well done boys - your coaches and parents are proud of you all!
