A win here ensured the victors would play senior football in 2025 and giving the losers a second chance in the endeavour. Therefore both team played their hearts out. Despite a nervy first few minutes, Kilmeena were the stronger side on the scoreboard, scoring a goal to Mayo Gaels one point. However the later pushed on creating chances but not scoring to Kilmeena's delight. This was not to last though as Mayo Gaels got a goal of their own with 5 minutes to go in the first half. Gaels went into the break one point up.
The second half saw both teams ramping up the intensity, transforming the cagey affair into an open contest. Kilmeena kept pressing up trying to force turnovers to some degree of success. With the game coming to conclusion there were increasing chances of extra time. This turned out to be true with Kilmeena scoring first in the extra time period. Mayo Gaels then pushed on to score 3 unanswered points. With extra time rapidly hurdling to a finish Kilmeena found themselves 2 points down. As they always do Kilmeena found a way and scored 2 points in injury time of the second half of extra time to put the game to penalties.
Kilmeena went first in the shootout, with Paul Groden hitting the post. They converted their next two penalties, but Mayo Gaels’ keeper pulled off a save on the fourth. Mayo Gaels matched them by scoring their first but missed completely on the second. Kilmeena finished their shootout on three, while Mayo Gaels held their nerve, scoring their last three penalties to win 4-3 and seal their place in senior football for 2025. Kilmeena now face Bellmullet in the relegation play off
