MORE SILVERWARE FOR THE 2019 KILMEENA U14 GIRLS TEAM
Kilmeena Girls U14 team took on Kilmoremoy B in the Division 4 league final in a windy Ballina on Sunday, October 20th 2019 at 2pm. Having tasted success in the championship final just two weeks previously this group of girls were determined to put up a good fight for a chance of winning some more silverware. This game was lining up to be a tight contest as this was the third time these teams had come up against each other over the season, victory in the first clash went to Kilmeena, the second time around it ended a draw, so the large crowd of supporters for both sides were guaranteed a tight competitive game.
Kilmeena had the wind advantage in the first half, but it took almost 8 minutes before a score was registered, a point from Lisa Hastings. The girls settled into their usual rhythm and free-flowing teamwork and contested every ball. Katie Moran got a point, Grace Gibbons scored 0-3, and Lisa Hastings and Aisling Hoban got a goal each bringing us to half time Kilmeena 2-5 to Kilmoremoy 0-2. The second half was going to be tough on our girls playing into a strong wind, and Kilmoremoy got 1-3 in the first 10 minutes. Our girls dug deep and worked the ball up to full forward Grace Gibbons who hit the net. Aimee Ingham scored a fine goal, and Grace Gibbons notched up another 1-1 bringing us into the closing stages of the game. Kilmeena held their lead but when Kilmoremoy were awarded a penalty with less than 3 minutes to go there was a sigh of relief from all of Kilmeena when the ball went wide. Our girls played defensively for the last few minutes to maintain their lead and they were worthy winners on the day. Well done to all involved.
