Kilmeena U14 Boys played Ballina at home on Thursday on a nice evening in the Division 1 League. We lined out below full strength due to a few absences due to sickness. We played into a light breeze in the first half, throughout much of the first half we were on top of possession but failed to convert enough of our chances. Around midway, through the first half, Ballina scored their first goal on a rebound following a good save from Rurari McDaid in Goal. Kilmeena’s scores in this half came from Frees taken by Darragh Slattery. At half time the score was 1 - 2 to 0 - 2 in favour of Ballina. The second half was a similar affair with Kilmeena on top in most areas but not able to get ahead on the scoreboard. Our defence was strong with Donal Hastings, in particular, dominating in his position. A killer blow came again when a speculative Ballina high ball entered the net in the top corner. Kilmeena fought bravely in the last quarter, but luck or accuracy was not on our side. Further points from Darragh Slattery, Rian Kilcoyne and Conor Feehan made for a tense end to the game. Overall we played well in many areas but will need to improve on our finishing. Our next game is away to Castlebar on Thursday 11th April.
